Sentimental Journey

We have lived at the same location for nine years. Doors have opened for us to relocate and we should be moving by the end of this month. We are not going far but our years of collecting seems a bit ominous right now. I am afraid that my image of that soothing succulent did not help me get over the overwhelming task of packing…I am exaggerating just a little. I am one that keeps her letters and I have saved some paperwork that belonged to my children from elementary school. Do I continue this journey with sentimental artifacts from years gone by. Our home is not large so we couldn’t possibly have that much. At the present moment I feel like a hoarder… Cleaning up always entails making a mess and that is where I am at..No need for pictures as it just looks pretty bad and out of control. Boxes are stacking up and we are making some headway.  Do we shuffle off to buffalo with our loads of memorabilia or leave some of it behind in the dumpster. My husband is telling me it’s ok..to be a hoarder and we can deal with it later..Lol! There may even be meetings that I can go to..to get well. Or maybe I will just take the first train out of here and not deal with it at all…

  1. I,m the other end of the scale, very minimalistic luckily my partner is too for a woman she is actually quite ruthless of getting rid of things that haven’t been used in a while :-). Good luck with your move …

  2. Moving house is stressful on its own so I think you should take everything you’re not sure about keeping and deal with it when you’re settled.

Love the photo of the old luggage!

  3. As a hoarder of all thing sentimental, pack it and take it. There are so many things I cannot part with and once you let go of those things, they are gone for good. I say this because my memory will not hold up to keep things fresh in my mind, but on the other hand, too much “stuff” creates too much baggage and we should all pare down as much as possible. Good luck on getting everything moved. I cannot even wrap my head around moving again.

  4. It’s funny – even people who never think of themselves as hoarders are shocked into reality when it comes time to move (I know from personal experience). The things we accumulate are just amazing. I’m in the process of “simplifying” my possessions at this time because I don’t want so much stuff when I move in the next few months. If a person has time to go through their possessions then I think it’s important to do so and eliminate things you don’t want, use, or need. Live simply (easier said than done), Love always, and laugh a lot. 🙂

  6. Dear Roberta, I know, it is not easy. I know this because I lived too… But be positive and just think of your new home and the new things… You know, you don’t leave your memories, they will be with you always… It will be so nice to have a new home… Change is good. Remember this… 🙂 Otherwise I am same as you and also so tearful too… My heart with you, Good Luck! Blessing and happiness for you both. Thanks and Love, nia

  7. Oh dear, my thoughts and prayers are with you! My wife and I have packed and moved 11 times in the 30 years we’ve been married. That decision process never gets any easier, and several times we’ve moved into smaller places. Our rule now is that if we haven’t used or looked at it in the last year, the memory is in our mind and doesn’t need the item itself. It works for us, but I know it won’t for everybody.

  8. I have done this many times before and am in the process of doing it again now. I’d just say…be careful. I know you can’t keep everything, but some things really are irreplaceable, and old letters are one of them. I liked Meanderer’s advice above and plan to take it myself! Good luck with your move and I wish you much happiness in your new home.

  9. Hi, Roberta. Two plus years ago we moved from a fairly large home to our 4 room condo. Some furniture is still at the former home (as yet unsold) but I did pack most of our life and bring it with us. In 2 months I packed 170 some sizable cartons of dishes, etc. and another 65 some of books. I am so glad! We have all our memories, and the keepsakes from several generations.

Yes, I am a “hoarder”–of beauty, nostalgia, memories of special people and events, and that includes a lot. It’s all organized and lovely–on shelves, neatly rotating in and out of a storage room, always ready to refresh to soul and interest curious eyes of the many little children who love to hear the stories.

Just today I sparkled up my grandmother’s wedding ironstone English transferware, circa 1880. All of my grandparents were born during the Civil War, and I feel close to that era.

Of course I left dumb stuff like Tupperware containers and plastic flowers behind. But that’s about all! I even brought things like my collection of horse chestnuts.

I shudder when I hear people go on sanctimoniously about “downsizing”, as if that were some super spiritual thing to do! As my wise young granddaughter, Alicia, says, “I know I “can’t take it with me to Heaven.” That’s why I enjoy it so much now! 🙂

  10. Our rule now is, that if we haven’t used at it in the last five year, then we throw it away. We started last month removal of goods, although we are moving next autumn. Many things have memories to be told. In some cases I took photos from things which are abandoning. Later I shoot also video from our home.
